Penn Caves
During the visit of Pennsylvania University with Akshay and Gayatri, we also enjoyed the tour of Penn Caves, Underground cave full of water, needing boating for moving and seeing it . Ours was the last boat ride. The boat driver was enthusiastic, and giving all details in wonderful way. We and all people on boat were excited while having under ground, water lake tour, through the designated boat. There was special lighting arrangement made in the caves and water, of which boatman was well aware , and used it very skillfully. He also used big powerful torches to show around the area in boat.
In 1885, Penn’s Cave opened as a commercial show cavern, and the Penn’s Cave Hotel was built. In 1978, Penn’s Cave and the Penn’s Cave House were placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Cave tours are arranged daily from 10.00 am to 4.00 on hourly basis.
What is a cave? The National Speleological Society defines a cave as a natural cavity, recess, chamber, or series of chambers or galleries occurring beneath the surface of the earth, usually extending to total darkness, and large enough to permit human entrance. A cavern is a specific type of cave, naturally formed in soluble rock, with the ability to grow speleothems. Speleothems are stalactites (formations that grow from the ceiling) and stalagmites (formations that grow up from the ground)
We Could see many Speleothems in the caves, in different forms, areas and shapes. It was really a marvelous and wonderful natural thing to see in the cave beneath the ground surface in the cave full of water. We were amazed by the natures creation. We had a beautiful photography in the caves too. It was a very unique tour and we really enjoyed it a lot.
It is a very very big garden, with various compartments, displaying different varieties of shrubs, tress, small and big. We can see number of varieties from Indian too, but here the colors are more bright and the size is very big than India- minimum 5-6 times bigger flowers of Indian origin. We feel that various different carpets have been spread over the area to welcome the visitors with great joy and fun.
