Hoover Dam

 Hoover Dam

We visited Hoover Dam, one of the most dams in the state of Nevada near the Das Vegas. This Dam has special importance looking at the time of its construction, time involved and cost incurred in completing this gigantic project on the border of the state of Arizona and Nevada located on the Colorado River.  The dam is 726 feet  tall and 1266 feets long .

We enjoyed a lot moving around the gigantic project, seeing the great construction while enjoying the weather and winds in the area. It it very much photogenic and we too had a lot of photo shoots.

For many years, residents of the American southwest sought to tame the unpredictable Colorado River. Disastrous floods during the early 1900’s led residents of the area to look to the federal government for aid, and experiments with irrigation on a limited scale had shown that this arid region could be transformed into fertile cropland, if only the river could be controlled. The greatest obstacle to the construction of such a dam was the allocation of water rights among the seven states comprising the Colorado River drainage basin.

It was the biggest dam constructed at that time in USA.  Its significane lies in the fact that it was built at a time when the USA was going through the worst depression in his history.  It was the era of insecurity and doubts and as such many objections to the project since the beginning. The dam is also a popular spot in movies and TV shows! It shows how human ingenuity can accomplish great things, inspiring generations of people to dream big and build remarkable projects, just like Hoover Dam!

Its construction took place in a great heat and temparature throught.   The nevada state always used to have greatest temparature record . As the workers had to work beneath the land in deep heat of 130 -140 degree F during summer time, many suffered from heart strokes multiple times.

Nazis plotted to destory this dam during world war II.Destroying Hoover Dam would have had the disastrous effect of cutting off critical electrical power to southern California’s bustling and crucial airplane manufacturing industry.

It was special in every respect, the design, the magnitude, the metals and material used.  Carrying all these things on a great hill and sandy area was literally a big challenge. Many questions were raised about its success, utility, feasibility etc. some also warned about  the series of catastrophic earthquakes, and some feared destruction of land behind the dam, if it failed.

While entering the dam area with our car, we were stopped by security guard at the gate  and asked whether we were carrying any guns with us. we replied no. and then he allowed us to go further in the dam area. It means that may be in usa public freely moves with guns in their cars etc ????

Hydroelectric Power Generation

Did you know Hoover Dam generates electricity? It has 17 turbines that produce over 4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity yearly! That’s enough to power around 1.3 million homes! The dam uses falling water to spin the turbines, creating energy without polluting the air. This kind of energy is called hydroelectric power, which is a renewable source, meaning it won’t run out as long as the water flows. The electricity helps people live, work, and play in cities like Los Angeles and Las Vegas! The project was so much big that it was literally impossible for any single giant contract to carry on its work.  Therefore a joint venture of big six contractors  was formed and pooling of their resources, talent, experience and agreeing to share the losses equally paved the way for this greatest dam project in USA.

It demonstrated to the world how the will power accompanied with sincere desire backed by the federal government can complete such a gigantic project .  It was really amazing model of construction of dams for the world to look at.

This dam is named after the former 31st President of USA , Herbert Hoover, for his vital work in organising and championing the project.  Though it is not the biggest dam in the world, it was the tallest dam at the time when built in 1935. During the construction hundres of workers have died in various types of accidents on site of construction.

Seeing its great archeological structure, its hight, length, width, deapth and scale of water inside is unique experience.  We really bow towards all of those involved in such a gigantic work .  Even in 2026 the dam is so much wonderful conditions that visitors like us from India trully  feel  proud of their commitment, looking af + the quality of work , when we hear the news of dams walls collapse during first few months of construction etc.
